The importance of the relation between performance, culture and oneself

Optimised performance is achieved when one evolves in the right environment and with the right dose of challenge. Our strengths can easily become weaknesses in the wrong context or the wrong culture. Our skills can also become watered down in the wrong job. Finding the right context for one to sparkle takes time and is rarely a straightforward journey.

Knowing yourself well on a deeper level forms a key part in making career choices that will make you thrive. Even if you get it wrong a few times, that is ok. You will learn something about yourself through those experiences. That introspective work on yourself brings greater clarity on what type of environment, profession or work you can go into and where you can flourish. It might sound obvious but very few of us tend to do that introspection because it requires looking deep into ourselves and that is not easy. Paradoxically, it is through others and through experiences that we discover ourselves. Ultimately, finding the right context where the company culture is aligned with who we are is crucial in developing a fulfilling career. Finding the role that will give us the right dose of challenge is equally important to make us grow.

What do we mean by the right context and the right culture anyway? Is it one that is aligned with our core beliefs? Is it one that challenges us? Is it one where there is more autonomy? Is it one where there is more direction? Is it one where it is fast paced or one that is slower paced? I could go on and on. It all depends on you, the person, on what makes who you are. It is also important to note that feeling too comfortable might decrease our performance and limit our growth. Growth is on the fringes of the uncomfortable. We all need to be challenged but not with the same dose! Because we are all different.

Being in the right context, culture, or job will enable you to progress, excel and perform at a high level. Either you’ll find it by accident, or through introspection. Know yourself and “find your element”.
